Spyglass privacy policy

Plain language on purpose. This is the same text the app shows under About → Privacy policy, which is read from the app itself and needs no connection.

Who we are. Spyglass is made by Thoughtful Steward, Denmark. Write to spyglass@thoughtfulsteward.org.

What Spyglass does with your data: almost nothing.

• There is no account and no sign-in.
• Spyglass does not track you, does not use advertising or analytics software, and does not sell or share anything about you.
• When you search, the title you typed and the country you chose are sent to our server, which asks our data provider, Movie of the Night (the Streaming Availability API), where that title can be watched. That request carries your device's internet address, as every internet request does. Our server does not record it. Apart from the monthly allowance described below, our server keeps only counts: how many requests, how many answered from memory, and how long they took.
• Your phone holds a random code, given to it by our server on first launch, so the server can count the free monthly lookups per installation. Against that code the server also keeps the titles already looked up in the current month, so that opening the same title again does not cost another lookup. Both the count and that short list are erased when the month turns. The code says nothing about you or your phone, is not linked to any account, and is not written to our logs.
• Your chosen country is stored on your phone only.
• If Spyglass stops working, it writes a description of the failure on your phone and, when there is a connection, sends that description to us so we can fix it. It contains the app version, the kind of phone, the time, and the technical error. It does not contain what you searched for, your chosen country, or anything else about you or your phone. It reaches our mailbox through a mail-sending service (Resend), which sees the same description and nothing more. You can see, copy and share the same text from the screen the app shows when it fails.

Your rights. Because we hold nothing that identifies you, there is nothing for us to show, correct or delete. If you believe otherwise, write to us. You can also complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet, dt@datatilsynet.dk).

Third parties. Tapping a service opens that service's own app or website, which has its own privacy policy. Purchases are handled by Apple or Google under their terms; we never see your payment details.

Changes. If this policy changes, the date below changes with it and the new text arrives with the next version of the app.
